Perla Kaliman

About

Perla Kaliman holds a PhD in Biochemistry from the University of Buenos Aires (Argentina), specializing in the relationships between protein structure and function. She was a postdoctoral fellow at the Faculty of Medicine-University of Nice (France), at the Faculty of Biology-University of Barcelona (Spain) and visiting fellow at the School of Medicine-University of California San Diego, where her work focused on cell signaling, differentiation and metabolism. Between 2001 to 2014, she was a Research Associate Scientist at the University of Barcelona, Institute of Biomedical Research August Pi i Sunyer (IDIBAPS) and the Institute of Biomedical Research of Barcelona (IIBB-CSIC) in Spain, where she led studies on the effect of nutrition and stress on the molecular pathophysiology of myotonic dystrophy and the epigenetic impact of physical exercise on aging and neurodegeneration. Currently, Dr. Kaliman is a Research Associate at the UCDavis Center for Mind and Brain collaborating in the Shamatha Project and Spirit Rock studies, and a Consultant Professor at the Universitat Oberta de Catalunya (UOC). She serves as a scientific advisor for several companies and foundations. 

Research Focus

Dr. Kaliman develops her current scientific research in areas of aging and healthy lifestyles, studying the effect of behavioral interventions such as nutrition and meditation on the epigenetic regulation of inflammation and other processes involved in most chronic diseases.
