Michael H. Buonocore, M.D.-Ph.D. has research interests in the science and clinical applications of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). His research tends to focus on the development of new MRI techniques for in-vivo measurement of physiological processes and tissue properties, with the ultimate goal of providing improved methods for diagnosing disease. Many of his early publications introduced new methods for the measurement and visualization of blood flow patterns in the heart and major vessels, and demonstrated various clinical applications of these methods. He is actively involved in the development of high-speed MRI techniques for functional brain imaging, and has initiated basic science and clinical imaging projects with faculty in Psychiatry, Neurology, Cognitive Neuroscience, Radiology, and Anesthesiology. To improve functional brain imaging he has developed new post-processing techniques for image noise reduction. Other research has focused on the development of pulse sequences and image processing algorithms for non-invasive measurement of renal hemodynamic parameters such as glomerular filtration rate (GFR), and the development of novel pulse sequences for non-invasive measurement of tissue perfusion and tissue viscoelasticity. His collaborative research efforts are extensive and involve faculty from many departments at the medical center and main campus. Dr. Buonocore holds two patents, including one describing the "spiral" pulse sequence now widely used in cardiovascular MRI. Dr. Buonocore completed his B.S. degree in Chemistry and Physics at Syracuse University in New York in 1997, and his M.S., Ph.D. (Electrical Engineering), and M.D. degrees at Stanford University in California in 1979, 1981, and 1983 respectively. Following graduation, he was Chief Scientist at Resonex Inc., an MRI equipment manufacturer, and later was Research Mathematician for UC Berkeley. He joined the faculty of the Dept. of Radiology in July 1, 1987, and was named MRI Technical Director for Radiology Department in July 1999. In July 2001 he was appointed to the position of Technical Director of the UC Davis Research Imaging Center.
