A fix for the Sophos AutoUpdate Error (Mac and PC)
A guide to repairing (or reinstalling) Sophos Anti Virus on Macs and Windows PCs.
Some CMB computers have been running with a defective version of Sophos Anti-Virus. Some symptoms include a round, red X on the Sophos icon in the system tray (Windows) or on the menu bar (Mac) as well as the inability to force Sophos to update. A quick fix to this is to uninstall Sophos, and install the stand-alone version of it available here. Note that this can only be done on a account with Administrator privileges.

To download and install the latest version of Sophos for Mac:

To download and install the latest version of Sophos for Mac:
- Log-in with your UCD “Kerberos” ID and password
- Select “Anti-Virus” from the list of options on the left
- Select “Sophos: Single-Machine”
- Scroll down to the bottom and choose the Mac OS version of “Download”
- In the pop-up window that appears, select "Download the software for your current license. or “Collect a new license for Sophos: Single-Machine and download the software.”
- Once the download is complete, locate the downloaded file, and mount it by double-clicking on the file
- Open the installer “Sophos Anti-Virus.mpkg”
- Follow the on-screen instructions and complete the installation.
- Apply a force-update by clicking on the new Sophos icon in the menu bar, then choose “Update Now”. Allow the updating process the finish (10-20 minutes)
- Restart your Mac

- Log-in with your UCD “Kerberos” ID and password
- Select “Anti-Virus” from the list of options on the left
- Select “Sophos: Single-Machine”
- Scroll down to the bottom and choose the Windows XP version of “Download”
- In the pop-up window that appears, select "Download the software for your current license. or “Collect a new license for Sophos: Single-Machine and download the software.”
- Once the download is complete, locate the downloaded ZIP file and open it by double-clicking the folder.
- Open the installer “SophosAV_7.0.7"
- Follow the on-screen instructions and complete the installation. Note that you will be required to enter a username and password, this is in the accompanying file "Sophos_username_and_password_Windows.txt"
- Once the installation is complete, apply a force update by right-clicking on the Sophos icon in the taskbar and select "Update Now"
- Allow the updating process to finish and restart your computer.
