Ron Mangun and Jesse Bengson receive NSF grant to study the neural mechanisms of willed attention

Ron Mangun and Jesse Bengson have been awarded a grant from the NSF for $532,005 to study the neural mechanisms of willed attention.  The concept of "voluntary attention" has been studied for decades using paradigms in which an external cue indicates the location to be attended. The project by Mangun and Bengson goes much farther, letting the individual research participant choose where to attend on each trial, providing a means of studying truly voluntary mental operations.
