Are you interested in participating in our research? We need subjects for our experiments. Please see the information below for details.

WE NEED VOLUNTEERS FOR OUR BEHAVIORAL STUDIES.

If you are interested in participating in our studies, please consider our subject criteria.  We are looking for individuals who fulfill the following:

  • deaf
  • fluent to strong signer of ASL
  • normal to corrected-to-normal vision
  • between the ages of 18 and 50

We will ask you to look at ASL signs, gestures, or objects on a computer screen and do things like make decisions about what you see, repeat actions, sign object names, and more.  These experiments take about an hour to complete and are conducted at the Center for Mind and Brain in Davis.  You will receive compensation for your participation.

WE NEED VOLUNTEERS FOR OUR fMRI STUDIES.

If you are interested in participating in our studies, please consider the subject criteria.  We are looking for individuals who fulfill the following:

  • deaf
  • fluent to strong signer of ASL
  • normal to corrected-to-normal vision
  • between the ages of 18 and 50

In addition, volunteers for our fMRI studies must pass a pre-MRI screening before scanning.

These experiments are similar to the behavioral experiments, but you will complete the tasks inside an MRI scanner.  We will ask you to look at signs, gestures, or text and make decisions about what you see and more while in the scanner.  These experiments take about 2-4 hours to complete and are conducted in a research-only MRI scanner at the UC Davis Imaging Center in Sacramento.  You will receive compensation for your participation and may receive a picture of your brain.

MRI is very safe.  It does not use ionizing radiation (like X-rays) and is completely non-invasive.  Instead, MRI works by using a strong magnetic field and low-power radio waves.  The total amount of energy to which a subject is exposed during an MRI scan is much less than that of a typical X-ray.

Functional MRI (fMRI) is a particular type of MRI scan that allows us to obtain pictures of brain activity over time.  While these images are being taken, volunteers are asked to perform different cognitive "tasks" designed to evoke different kinds of mental activity.  Typical tasks in a study might include remembering lists of words, looking at pictures, or listening to sentences.  This information can be used to study how the brain is organized for the production of mental operations like learning, memory, and perception.

WE NEED VOLUNTEERS FOR OUR ONLINE SURVEY.

If you are interested in participating in the Online Survey, please consider the subject criteria.  We are looking for individuals who fulfill the following:

  • deaf
  • fluent to strong signer of ASL
  • normal to corrected-to-normal vision
  • between the ages of 18 and 50

The survey asks you to rate your familiarity with the signs presented in the survey.  Participating in the Online Survey does not require you to schedule a visit with us.  You may do the survey on a computer wherever you feel comfortable.  You will receive compensation for your participation.

Contact us to receive information and a ticket to take the Online Survey.
