PROGRAM IN COGNITIVE NEUROSCIENCE
The Program in Cognitive Neuroscience at UC Davis was founded by Michael Gazzaniga and Ron Mangun in 1994 with support from the James S. McDonnell Foundation and the Pew Charitable Trust. The then recently opened Center for Neuroscience served as the administrative home of the program. As one of the eight McDonnell-Pew Programs in Cognitive Neuroscience established in North America and Europe, the UC Davis program grew rapidly and served as a focus for the development of cognitive neuroscience in the U.S. Between 1994 and 1998 the UC Davis Program in Cognitive Neuroscience trained numerous doctoral and postdoctoral fellows, organized the McDonnell Summer Institute in Cognitive Neuroscience, fostered the establishment of the Cognitive Neuroscience Society, hosted the editorial office of the Journal of Cognitive Neuroscience, and saw the creation of the first textbook in Cognitive Neuroscience. Between 1998 and the present, the influence of the program has aided in the development of the Center for Mind and Brain, the Imaging Research Center and the M.I.N.D. Institute.
Today, the Program in Cognitive Neuroscience is a non-degree granting program for undergraduate, doctoral and postdoctoral trainees. The program is interdisciplinary and is cooperatively supported by the Center for Mind and Brain, the Center for Neuroscience, the Imaging Reseach Center, the M.I.N.D. Institute and the Perception, Cognition and Cognitive Neuroscience Area of the Psychology Department.
